Bud, Not Buddy
Bud Not Buddy is a historical novel about a 10 year old orphan
boy named Bud Caldwell. This story takes place during the Great Depression.
Some of the story takes place in Flint, Michigan and other parts in the story
takes place in a town called Hooverville that was named after President Herbert Hoover.
Buddy became an orphan because his mother died. After that he goes to a foster
home and he gets adopted by strangers. He didn’t get along with them and they
treated him as if he was a dog. Bud didn’t like it whenever they called him
Buddy because he felt as if it was a dog name. He left them and started
traveling across the country to find his father by using clues from his mother
at the time she was alive. His parents were separated and he never saw his father before. She used to listen to jazz music from a band called, “Herman E.
Calloway and the Dusky Devastators of the Depression.” He thought that Herman E. Calloway was his
father. Bud traveled most of his journey
with other people. While Bud was traveling, he made rules for himself so he
could stay alive.
How
Did I Get This Book?
The first time I had got this book was when I was 8 in
the third grade. My mom had given the book to me when she was a teacher at a high
school and she had got it from her school library. The second time I had got it
was when I was 10 in the 5th grade because the book was a class
assignment for our reading comprehension and each Friday we would have been
tested on it. It was a little bit easy for me because I already knew about the
book and I spoiled the things that would happen in the book to my classmates. Some of them
thought that I was just reading ahead of them.
About The Author
The author of Bud Not Buddy is Christopher Paul Curtis.
Christopher Paul Curtis had a father named Herman E. Curtis so I guess Herman
E. Calloway is based on his father. Christopher Curtis is one of my favorite authors because he writes
books that are based from American or African American history that can be very
entertaining. I like the Bud Not Buddy story along with a few other people from
my school. Also I like a story that he wrote called “The Watsons Go to
Birmingham” because it has to deal a lot with the pain from African Americans during
segregation time. It’s not mostly about that but it’s about a family during the
segregation time. I didn’t read the novel but I did watch the movie on Netflix.
